Camargue & Bouches du Rhône

In the wild, sandy Camargue & Bouches du Rhône region, Mistral from the Rhône Delta takes centre-stage – right up to the western reaches of the Côte d’Azur. The Camargue is best-known for its solitary sandy beaches, wild horses and flamingoes, although some good breaks nestle within the Rhône Delta’s gigantic marshland. The speedsailing mecca of Saintes-Maries-de-la-Mer witnesses a special kind of festival every year – at the end of May, thousands of ‘Sinti’ and ‘Roma’ assemble to honour the travellers’ patron saint, ‘Black Sarah’.
