Costa Cálida & Mar Menor

Poniente’s mainly offshore and therefore unsuitable in Alicante – but it’s great in Costa Cálida & Mar Menor, where you can score nice wave sessions in the Calblanque nature reserve. It gets really good in Levante, with clean cross-shore conditions while it’s blowing onshore at every other break. Summer awakes the hotspots of the Mar Menor, separated from the Mediterranean by a 24km-long – mostly built-up – sandy strip. It might not be so well-known among Northern Europeans, yet Spain’s largest salt water lake is top of the pops with Spaniards. For good reason too, as the flat-water spots are ideal for beginners and freestyle in spring, early summer and autumn – especially with a kite. The temperature difference between Mar Menor and the interior ensures that Leveche (south-south-westerly) gets thermally reinforced to around 15 knots most afternoons. Plus the standing-depth water is already bikini-warm in early summer – avoid high-season though, when the thermal doesn’t work so well and countless holidaymakers fill the many hotels and beaches.
