Flanders

The Belgian coast offers expansive sandy beaches in most places. The wide-open dune landscapes encountered in The Netherlands are rare here, though some can be found further north beyond Knokke or south near the French border. The Belgian coastline is almost exclusively built-up. While seaside resorts like Knokke and De Haan still exude some turn-of-the-century grandeur, most other beaches look like the architects went wild in the ’60s and ’70s. In-between are the industrial ports of Zeebrugge and Oostende, where cranes and port structures dominate the scene. Many communities have designated kite and windsurf areas (controlled in the summer months). Still, there’s always enough scope to avoid the crowded resorts and during the off-season this really isn’t a problem anyway.
