Rügen

Germany’s largest island, Rügen’s numerous bays, peninsulas and lagoon waters offer over 500km of coastline; more than the whole of Schleswig-Holstein’s Baltic coast. Even so, no town on the island is more than 8km from the sea. It’s known mainly for its myriad of flat-water and standing-depth locations – like Ummanz, Germany’s largest shallow venue. You can also find a few nice breaks on the steep north and east coasts. Their exposed location ensures westerly winds arrive unhindered on Rügen. Fair weather easterlies are strong too as they’re accelerated by the island’s thermal. And the good news is Rügen has plenty of sun – 1,850 hours of sunshine a year is a figure only Fehmarn and Freiburg can match. Waveheads might wonder why the best wind directions are often cross-on or even onshore on Usedom and Rügen. The reason being shallow Baltic waters only produce a decent beach-break when the wind forces water straight in. The locals are used to this and you’ll be amazed at what they can do in onshore waves.
