South Padre Island

A vacation hotspot for Americans, Mexicans and wind junkies, South Padre Island is a genuine beach playground with loads of bars, restaurants and the like. In ‘spring break’, thousands of college students descend on ‘SPI’ bringing madness like wet T-shirt competitions to this sleepy island. The summer heat attracts the next invasion of holidaymakers. With reliable wind and far fewer tourists, March to May and Oct to the end of November are the best times to visit. The spots are divided between two waters. A beginner’s kite and windsurf heaven, Laguna Madre offers gigantic sandy beaches which can be driven on to, and miles of shallow, flat sea. Alternatively, the Gulf of Mexico promises forgiving beach-breaks from 0.5 to 3m and some long downwinders.
