Secret Spot

Guadeloupe

Auszug aus dem KITE AND WINDSURFING GUIDE:

The nearest launch to the capital 'Point-à-Pitre’ is Les Salines, a little freeride bay with cross-onshore wind from the left and a few small waves on the reef. Les Salines is totally undeveloped by south coast standards, and a good alternative if it gets too busy at the weekend in Saint-Anne. The reef in front of the sugar cane town of Saint Anne produces a nice left for three or four turns with E-SE swell (Apr-Aug). It’s a wonderful ride through the channel over crystal-clear turquoise waters, but both the beach and water are always packed with bathers. A better location for tricks and freeride is Bois Jolan, or 'Kite Beach’. The standing-depth turquoise lagoon offers perfect training conditions for beginners and experts alike. Saint-François is also a double-spot with a large, turquoise lagoon for freeride or waves on the reef. They’re not the same quality as Saint-Anne, but they’re still great for getting into wavesailing. The former World Cup venue is also a favourite beach for the masses, the best launch is behind UCPA Club. While the south coast only receives windswell, at least in wintertime the north coast also scores groundswell. One of the best spots is Le Moule, a reef-break often ending in a nice bowl. The wind blows from the right; cross-shore in E, cross-off in SE. But take a good look before launching – the channel’s tiny, the currents strong and the reef’s covered in sea urchins. Offshore from the small sandy beach of Anse-Bertrand there’s a reef that also works in N swell. It’s a right-hander with cross-off wind, and demands a high level of skill. The island’s best waves break in front of Port Louis, although the swell has to be really big to make it into the bay and the wind’s mainly offshore (ESE is best). There’s a choice of two rights: one just across from the cemetery and another five minutes north on Pointe d’Antigue. Don’t miss the boat-trip to little Illet Caret about 5km off the north coast of Basse Terre where a wide reef-belt forms enormous lagoons. From the little town of 'Morne Rouge’ (near 'St Rose’) the fishermen offer round trips for about 20 – and they’ll tell you a bit about their island too. Kiters are rarely spotted there, generally tourists hunting for the perfect holiday-snap. A genuine Secret Spot is the channel of the outer reef 500m north of Illet Caret. In large N swell a super-quick, hollow wave breaks over coral just below the surface that instantly punishes any mistakes. The setting is much more laid-back in Grande Anse on the south coast of Basse Terre. The launch from this wide (dark) beach with views of the neighbouring Îles de Saintes offers long freeride runs that can morph into mid-size wave sessions given the right wind-strength and swell. The wind’s slightly accelerated by the mountains so it’s worth the hour’s drive if the south coast isn’t windy enough, or after a visit to La Soufrière volcano.
